Science impacts the technology of yesterday, today, and the future. In this unit, students apply the concepts of physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology to activities and projects, including making ice cream, cleaning up an oil spill, and discovering the properties of nano-materials.
WHAT WE'RE DOING IN CLASS:
We just completed our intro project of Ice Cream making! The scholars learned the chemistry behind NaCl combined with ice and its effect on an ice cream base. They also explored different mixing techniques to determine the method that solidified the liquid the fastest. Some scholars kneaded, some scholars shook, and some scholars tossed their ice cream bags to mix their substances. We concluded that the shaking method was the best mixing method! The scholars were able to partake in their projects at the conclusion.
Our next activity will be an investigation into the chemistry behind glue. The scholars will learn and test different compounds to identify what combination creates the strongest hold. They will create two different glue products and test them out with a combination of weights and fabrics.
